Future of Refrigerators

Interestingly enough that refrigerators improved so much in size, type and design that it don’t need to be upgraded further but be more energy efficient. Therefore, as i disscussed in techpost one instead of making these polluters of planet, people will create artificial foods that will be simply in packets of their size which will work as holder of bacteries that won’t cause any further eruption to the food but keep it for longer times. Consumers will be almost all people because by the time it will replace all food products at the store and will be available for all. However, let’s not forget that the main purpose of refrigerators is to cool or freeze food and drinks; therefore, it makes no sense for having artificial one if someone wants something cold. Hence, with artificial food we will have prototypes of refrigerators too. It will work as a refrigerator but it’s a robot called “robofridge”. The main difference of this robofridge is that it moves and also we will be able to communicate with it and order some tasks to do. For example, one needs a cold drink, so he can simply call robofridge and say that his drink needs to be cooled within a given time. At first, only wealthy people will be able to afford this machine but as soon as robots gain their popularity in doing people’s work, every home will be equipped with robofridge.

As future goes the technology also keeps improving; however the problems of global warming are not solved. According to article “5 Deadliest Effects of Global Warming”, one effect is increased probability of droughts and heat waves which will lead to weaken farm conditions and decrease food supplies. In order to solve this problem, humanity in 2015 will produce artificial food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated so it will decrease the use of fridges. Although most artificial food nowadays are not healthy, the one in the future will have a specific adds that works as vitamins for the body. These food will be available at all stores and more efficient in buying. Nevertheless, traditional refrigerators won’t dissapear but will transform into something else.

Nowadays, robot machines are developing incredibly fast and more than half of the work in factories are done by them. They are all programmed to do a certain task; however, they can’t understand people or communicate with them. Although there are some robots with whom u can make conversation, it can answer only simple questions. So by the end of 2015, will appear the first robot who can easily talk to people and follow their instructions just by understanding what people said. As this technique becomes popular people will use it in industrial productions. Kitchen appliances such as microwace, fridge also will be equipped with that robotic mind. This will change everything making people’s lives more comfortable and exciting. Comparing to traditional refrigerator, robofridge is smaller in size and more energy efficient that allows it to do no harm to the world.

These two milestones can occur any time but development of technology grows everyday. The previous refrigerators worked on the basis of chemical mixture that harms our health, till this day it is been improved but now it harms to our nature consuming energy and giving off to much CO2, so i believe that future will solve this problems not bringing other troubles.

Vannevar Bush was American engineer and science administrator known for his work on analog computing, political role in creation of the atomic bomb and theoretical machine called “memex” which meant to enhance human memory by allowing the user to store and retrieve documents linked by associations as he described it in his book “As We May Think”. Most of the information i took from wikipedia and there was one photo where he was sitting with the group of people ,chilling, so i included them as his friends. Also because he played a big role in developing atomic bomb Albert Enstien might be worked under his command, so they were friends as well. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, a man who invented World Wide Web might have some connection with Bush because they both were associated with developing internet; Bush had a theory ,whereas Berners-Lee came up to create it. In this activity i created a facebook profile of Bush and using photoshop changed some information because there was age limit and replaced photos of mine with his friends. Also uploaded some of his phots founded in the internet.

The Technological Development of Refrigerator Through History

From ancient times the refrigerator keeps to evolve and modernize bringing a significant effect on our society. The refrigerator developed new ways of dealing with food and was cause of inventing other kitchen appliances. We can describe evolution of it in three eras: pre industrial, industrial and post industrial time periods.

“Before mechanical refrigeration systems were introduced, people chilled their food with ice and snow, either found locally or brought down from the mountains”(par 1 “The History of the Refrigerators and Freezers”). According to Barbara Krasner-Khait in “The Impact of Refrigeration” China was first nation to use ice as a cooling device before the first millennium in 1000 B.C. (par 5). The evolution of refrigerator started with cellars packed with ice, dug into the ground and covered by wood or other materials to provide insulation and preserve for long periods. Due to this invention, cold drinks become popular in Southern Europe. People could calm down their thirst by drinking fresh and cool drink mixed with ice. Later, the cellars developed into big ice boxes and were transportable.

During industrial revolution a lot of changes had been made in manucfacturing, production and inventing new technoligies that had an impact on people’s lives. It gave a new step in inventing mechanical cooling system as well. After discovering that certain gases under constant pressure will condense when they cool , “Jacob Perkin built the first practical refrigerating machine”(par 3 “The History of the Refrigerators and Freezers”). Since then, the way of cooling been evolving but basic principle of cooling stayed the same. It didn’t require real ice anymore but produced artificial one by itself working on electricity. Brewing industries were first to notice the significant benefits of refrigeration because it “enabled breweries to make a uniform product all year around”(par 13 Krasner-Khait). Some decades later, almost all American companies that dealt with perishable products like dairy products or meat packing were equipped with a refrigeration machines that improved their production; however, due to its big size and high price not all people could allow themselves to have this technology as a household item.

After industrial revolution, because of its necessity the manufacture of refrigerator increased significantly making it available to every home with an average income. A lot of companies started to produce these machines competing with each other that led the refrigerator to vary in size, style and design. The refrigerator became the most important appliance in the kitchen and changed the way people eat. Moreover, because of frozen food stored in it, it gave birth to a new invention known as a microwave that comparing to refrigerator works oppositely heats the food.

Though a little time past since the refrigerator was first invented, the use of it increased incredibly fast and the result affected a big area and it became essential part of people’s life. As the historical precedent of it began from ancient times, refrigerator still continues to change as technology keeps improving.

                           Refrigerator in Contemporary Society

A refrigerator or as we call it “fridge” is a kitchen appliance that works as a cooling device to keep substances at lower temperatures. Most of the refrigerators are combined from two parts: the largest one keeps the products a few degrees above the freezing point of water and the other one, “freezer”, maintains a temperature that is below 0’C; however, in some cases they come in separate parts. They also keep improving over time because of high competitiveness between manufacturers, and have many different models varying in sizes and types in order to satisfy customers’ needs. Refrigerators are largely used for holding chilled and frozen food. The basic principle of it is to slow down the activity of bacteria in food, so the food stays fresh for another day or maybe week.

The refrigerator is one of those miracles of modern living that totally changed life. Once considered as a luxury afforded only by the wealthy, today nearly all homes are equipped with what is perceived a “necessity”. Can one even imagine how it would be like without a “fridge”? People’s expenses on food would be doubled up because most of the products that they buy weekly would be spoilt over a short period of time. Not only expenses but also their desires for a cold drink like beer or juice wouldn’t be accomplished during a hot day. Therefore, refrigerators have a big impact on people’s lifestyle allowing them “ to purchase, store, freeze, prepare and preserve food products in a fresh state for much longer periods of time than was previously possible”(part 6 Wikipedia). For example, as an exclusive dairy product in the past that was “only available by traveling long distances to where it was made fresh and had to be eaten on the spot”, nowadays ice cream became a common food item which one can find almost in every grocery store(part 6 Wikipedia). Nevertheless, for a positive effect on one side there should be a negative result on the other.
Similar to all technologies refrigerator consumes electricity to work; hence, produces some carbon dioxide as Rachel Muston, a 32-year-old information-technology worker, says in the article “Trashing the fridge”(par 5 Kurutz). At first, people might say that one fridge may have an insignificant effect; however, if there are about 100 million families in the world that have refrigerator, the result of the effect multiplies by exactly the same amount, so now we see how a little effect becomes very significant cause on global warming. So this article tells us how Muston and her husband decide to unplug their fridge and instead use a small freezer and a cooler that doesn’t produce as much greenhouse gases as refrigerators. Hence, the main point we can infer here is that even with a small change later on, we can achieve a big results convincing other people to stop producing greenhouse gases for our better future.
In conclusion, refrigerators are the smart inventions that humans could ever create. Due to their continuous usage in daily life, they become one of the most needed technologies for home. However, because of global warming that one day can leave us without natural grown food, technology may advance so far ahead that there are going to be factories that will produce artificial food which don’t need to be kept at low temperatures to obtain its freshness.
